More Evidence: Marijuana Causes Cancer Cells To Commit Suicide

Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist from Compultense University in Madrid, first reported in 1998 that TetraHydroCannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis, induces tumor cell suicide while leaving healthy non-tumor cells alone. She discovered that when exposed to THC, tumor cells not only ceased to multiply and proliferate but also destroyed themselves, both in lab tests and animal trials.

A Harvard study from 2007, which remains the most comprehensive ever released on THC’s potential to combat tumors, also found that in just three weeks, doses of THC were able to cut lung cancer tumor growth in half in mice subjects and were able to reduce cancer lesions by even more.

Chemical components of Cannabis, called cannabinoids, activate specific receptors found throughout the body to produce pharmacologic effects, particularly in the central nervous system and the immune system. Commercially available cannabinoids, dronabinol and nabilone, are FDA approved drugs for the treatment of cancer-related side effects.

When inhaled or consumed, cannabis cannabinoids are incorporated into the body’s natural endocannabinoid system that regulates a lot of biological functions such as appetite, food intake, motor behavior, and reproduction among others. Because of this, tumor cells are thrust into a state of apoptosis, meaning they self-destruct.

New Alzheimer’s treatment fully restores memory function!

Australian researchers have come up with a non-invasive ultrasound technology that clears the brain of neurotoxic amyloid plaques – structures that are responsible for memory loss and a decline in cognitive function in Alzheimer’s patients.

If a person has Alzheimer’s disease, it’s usually the result of a build-up of two types of lesions – amyloid plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles. Amyloid plaques sit between the neurons and end up as dense clusters of beta-amyloid molecules, a sticky type of protein that clumps together and forms plaques.

Neurofibrillary tangles are found inside the neurons of the brain, and they’re caused by defective tau proteins that clump up into a thick, insoluble mass. This causes tiny filaments called microtubules to get all twisted, which disrupts the transportation of essential materials such as nutrients and organelles along them, just like when you twist up the vacuum cleaner tube.

As we don’t have any kind of vaccine or preventative measure for Alzheimer’s – a disease that affects 343,000 people in Australia, and 50 million worldwide – it’s been a race to figure out how best to treat it, starting with how to clear the build-up of defective beta-amyloid and tau proteins from a patient’s brain. Now a team from the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) at the University of Queensland have come up with a pretty promising solution for removing the former.

Publishing in Science Translational Medicine, the team describes the technique as using a particular type of ultrasound called a focused therapeutic ultrasound, which non-invasively beams sound waves into the brain tissue. By oscillating super-fast, these sound waves are able to gently open up the blood-brain barrier, which is a layer that protects the brain against bacteria, and stimulate the brain’s microglial cells to activate. Microglila cells are basically waste-removal cells, so they’re able to clear out the toxic beta-amyloid clumps that are responsible for the worst symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Study: Here’s How Cannabis Helps Your Body Fight Off Cancer!

A study in the journal Biochemical Pharmacology, published July 2014, elaborates upon a unique mechanism of cannabinoids’ anti-cancer activity. It is notable for demonstrating how cannabinoids work synergistically with the body’s immune system to stop cancer, unlike traditional treatments which destroy the immune system in the process of stopping cancer.

Researchers tested the effects of CBD, THC, and an endocannabinoid analogue called methanandamide on two lung cancer cell lines, A549 and H460, along with cells from a lung cancer patient. It found these compounds increased expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) on the cancer cells, which made them more susceptible to white blood cells called lymphokine-activated killer cells (LAK). However, normal cells were not affected this way, showing yet again that cannabinoids can selectively target abnormal cells while leaving healthy tissue alone.

LAK cells are a very powerful part of the body’s natural anti-cancer defense system. In fact, direct administration of LAK cells has been tested for cancer treatment, along with interleukin-2, a cellular signaling protein that activates LAK cells. This has shown promise, but like most pharmaceutical interventions there are unpleasant side effects. Using cannabinoids is a safer and potentially more effective way to take advantage of the body’s natural LAK cells.

Black Death Rears its Putrid Head Again!

Chinese Lock Down City Of 30,000 After Man Dies Of Bubonic Plague

As a precautionary measure after a man died of bubonic plague last week, a small city in China is in lockdown and 151 individuals have been placed in quarantine, the Guardian reports.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), the 38-year-old man died from the disease last Wednesday which was likely the result of contact with a dead marmot, a large ground squirrel usually found in mountainous areas.

In an attempt to prevent further cases, CCTV said that the 30,000 residents of Yumen, located in the north-western province of Gansu, are not allowed to leave and police have set up roadblocks around the city in order to prevent motorists from entering. Furthermore, four quarantine sectors have been set up in the city for individuals that have been in contact with the man who died, but so far no other cases have been reported.

“The city has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month,” CCTV said. “Local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition.”

Plague, one of the oldest identifiable diseases known to man, is infamous and has certainly left its mark on history. The disease is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis that infects numerous different animals such as rats, squirrels and prairie dogs. The bacteria maintain their existence in a cycle involving both these animals and their fleas.

Y. pestis can be transmitted to humans in three ways: flea bites, contact with infected fluids or infectious droplets coughed up by an individual with the disease. There are various different clinical forms of plague, but the most common are bubonic, septicemic and pneumonic.

There have actually been three major plague pandemics recorded in history. The first documented plague, the “Justinian Plague,” began in 541 AD and continued for around 200 years, eventually killing over 100 million people. The most famous is the “Black Death” that occurred in the 14th Century, wiping out 60% of the European population. The last pandemic to occur began in China in the 1860s and killed around 10 million people.

Whales Are Bouncing Back! – Yay!

The Rarest Whale on Earth is Bouncing Back From the Brink

Closure of shipping lanes has helped the North Atlantic right whale population hit a new high.

(Photo: Stefan Ernst/Getty Images)

(Photo: Stefan Ernst/Getty Images)

id all the depressing news about the declining state of the world’s oceans, here’s a genuine feel-good story: The critically endangered North Atlantic right whale population, once decimated by ship collisions, has rebounded to more than 500 individuals. That’s the highest level since researchers began studying the whale three decades ago.

News of the whales’ recovery was first reported Monday in the Yarmouth County Vanguard, a Nova Scotia newspaper. According to the article, the right whale population in Canada’s Bay of Fundy has added more than 300 calves since 1998.

Every summer and fall, a scientific survey is conducted to count and study the right whale population in the Bay, a critical habitat area.

The rebound was the result of a multiyear effort led by the Irving Oil company of Saint John, New Brunswick, in partnership with researchers, mariner organizations, environmental groups, the Canadian government, and the International Maritime Organization.

In 2003 the coalition successfully pushed for the rerouting of shipping traffic in the Bay of Fundy, which lies between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and is an important feeding ground and nursery area for the North Atlantic right whale population.

Swim to the Center of the Earth?

Water is what gives our planet its beautiful blue color and is critical for the existence of life as we know it. Our entire planet is nicknamed after it – the “blue planet”, or “pale blue dot”. A new study led by geophysicist Steve Jacobsen of Northwestern University and seismologist Brandon Schmandt from the University of New Mexico has yielded evidence that vast oceans worth of water are tied up within Earth’s mantle. The results are published in Science.

Four hundred miles beneath North America, Schmandt and Jacobsen found deep pockets of magma, which indicates the presence of water. However, this isn’t water in any of the three forms we are familiar with. The pressure coupled with the high temperatures forces the water to split into a hydroxyl radical (OH) which is then able to combine with the minerals on a molecular level.

This water, which is bound up in rock, could indicate the largest water reservoir on the planet. It is believed that plate tectonics cycle the water in and out, and the water affects the partial melting of rock in the mantle.

“Geological processes on the Earth’s surface, such as earthquakes or erupting volcanoes, are an expression of what is going on inside the Earth, out of our sight,” said Jacobsen in a press release. “I think we are finally seeing evidence for a whole-Earth water cycle, which may help explain the vast amount of liquid water on the surface of our habitable planet. Scientists have been looking for this missing deep water for decades.”

Moon Mystery solved.

55 Year Old Mystery About The Dark Side Of The Moon Solved

A team of astrophysicists claim to have solved one of the great mysteries of the moon, in the process providing insight into our companion’s creation and a new take on our frame of reference.

When the Soviet spacecraft Luna 3 transmitted the first images from the other side of the moon it was expected it would look pretty much like the side we are familiar with. Instead they saw none of the “seas” visible to Earthly astronomers with small telescopes, and only a couple of smaller dark areas covering 2% of the surface.

For 55 years the question of why the two sides are so different has remained a puzzle, now known as the Lunar Farside Highlands Problem. “I remember the first time I saw a globe of the moon as a boy, being struck by how different the farside looks,” says Jason Wright “It was all mountains and craters. Where were the maria? It turns out it’s been a mystery since the fifties.”

Now Wright, and colleagues at Penn State University have come up with an explanation, published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

It has long been known that the absence of the basaltic plains we call maria or seas is a result of the crust being thicker on the far side, but it has been unclear whether this greater thickness on the side away from the Earth was a coincidence.

The Moon’s size, relative to Earth, has also been a puzzle with the theory that it was formed from debris thrown up when an object the size of Mars collided with the Earth gaining steadily more favor.

“Shortly after the giant impact, Earth and the moon were very hot,” says Professor Steinn Sigurdsson, another of the paper’s authors. Sigurdsson notes that the moon initially lay much closer to the Earth, ensuring it was more affected by our gravity.

At such a close distance, the Penn state team propose, synchronous rotation where one side always faces the object it is orbiting, would have occurred very rapidly. The same phenomenon is seen with planets orbiting close to their stars.

While the Earth-Moon interaction has slowly pushed the Moon to 10 or 20 times its original distance, with a correspondingly much longer orbit, its rotation has kept pace so that the same side has always face the Earth.

The smaller moon would have cooled while the Earth remained hot from the collision, 2500°C according to the paper’s authors. For the side of the Moon facing the Earth it would be like having two suns – the second one cooler and smaller but also much closer. As a result the side facing the Earth would have cooled more slowly than that facing towards outer space.

“When rock vapor starts to cool, the very first elements that snow out are aluminum and calcium,” says Sigurdsson. These would have snowed out first on the cooler far side, creating a thicker crust of plagioclase feldspars. The highlands have much more alumina (24% to 15%), and much less iron oxide (14% to 6%) and titanium dioxide (4% to 1%) concentrations.

When asteroids struck the moon’s near side lava flowed to fill the spaces, but on the far side the thicker crust almost always prevented lava flowing.

There is a certain irony to the new theory. Some astronomers are annoyed at references to the “Dark Side of the Moon”. Sunlight reflected off the Earth aside, the far side of the moon gets just as much light as the side we can see. Once however, it seems that if the far side was not actually dark, then it was certainly much less light than the side lit up by close association to the molten Earth.

In January 2002, astronomers discovered a massive explosion coming from V838 Monocerotis. They initially thought they were witnessing a supernova, but after the initial flash of light began to dim (as expected), it began to brighten again in infrared wavelengths at the beginning of March. After that brightening faded, another one happened in April. While astronomers were certain they weren’t witnessing a supernova, they weren’t quite sure what it actually was.

Now the Hubble team have released an absolutely extraordinary time-lapse video of the event. Check it out here, and make sure you go full screen.

Consciously Control Your Immune System!

On March 23rd, 2013, twenty-four scientific study participants were injected with a strain of bacteria that normally induces violent sickness for days on end. This time, however, none of the twelve people who were trained in the Wim Hof Method experienced any ailment whatsoever. They had learned what it takes from 20-time World Record holder Wim Hoff, the first person to show that humans can consciously control their immune system. The other twelve, the untrained control group, were left to shiver and suffer. The follow-up of that first study on Wim is now published in the prominent scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy for Sciences (PNAS). They studied his method, a practice consisting of third-eye meditation, cyclic hyperventilation followed by breath retention and cold exposure. (You can read part of the method here.) The research suggests everyone, with sufficient training, can modulate their immune response. In the study they took 24 healthy young volunteers and injected them with a dead strain of bacteria Escherichia coli, provoking a strong immune reaction. The results were amazing.

The creator of the Wim Hof Method (you can find more about Wim Hof here) is known by many as a human outlier, capable of things we mere mortals can only dream of. He is the world record holder of ice endurance by standing in a container full of ice for 1 hour 52 minutes and 42 seconds. He ran a full marathon above the polar circle at a temperature of −20 °C (−4 °F) on his bare feet. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro just wearing shorts. And not only can his body withstand cold, he is also capable of doing amazing feats in the heat. Last year he ran a full marathon (42.195 kilometres (26.219 mi)) on the highest desert plains in the world, the Namib Desert, without any water nor any food. But now, in this ground-breaking study, he has shown he is, in fact, not an anomalous outlier, but a very well-trained man. His technique can be taught to everyone. (this is what Wim claims, the researchers are themselves clearly indicate that we can’t predict the same results with people with diseases. However, first-person reports of people with diseases state that it, indeed, helps them too.) Practice makes all the difference.

How to Stop Eating Crap!

This Tiny Pocket Scanner Tells What Your Food Is Made Of in One Zap.

The SCiO device uses the molecular footprint of an object to tell you its chemical makeup.

Have you ever tapped on dozens of watermelons at the grocery store to find the sweetest out of the bunch—only to get one home and find out it’s a sour dud? Well, in less than a year, you’ll be able to tell which melon to buy, thanks to a USB drive–size pocket device.

Israel-based company Consumer Physics recently announced a Kickstarter campaign for a pocket molecular sensor called SCiO. The tiny device will have the ability to scan the molecular fingerprint of physical matter, such as food, medicine, and plants, and identify its chemical makeup. Think of it as portable x-ray vision that can see beyond the surface of an object and identify the good, the bad, and the ugly lurking inside.

Cofounder and CEO Dror Sharon showed me how the device works by scanning a piece of cheese. Within seconds, through the SCiO smartphone food app (and with no manual entering of information), the type of food and nutritional scores appeared. He then showed me the nutritional facts on the actual packaging of the cheese, which matched the scores the SCiO picked up through scanning.

If you wave it over your watermelon, in seconds the ripeness and produce quality, as well as the calorie, fat, carbohydrate, and protein breakdown, are delivered to the app.

Molecular Biologist Explains How THC Completely Kills Cancer Cells.

Below is a video of Dr. Christina Sanchez, a molecular biologist at Compultense University in Madrid, Spain, clearly explaining how THC (the main psychoactive constitute of the cannabis plant) completely kills cancer cells.

Not long ago, we published an article examining a case study recently published where doctors used cannabis to treat Leukemia, you can read more about that here. To read more articles and view studies about how cannabis is an effective treatment and cure for cancer, click here.

Cannabinoids refer to any of group of related compounds that include cannabinol and the active constituents of cannabis. They activate cannabinoid receptors in the body. The body itself produces  compounds called endocannabinoids and they play a role in many processes within the body that help to create a healthy environment. I think it’s also important to note that cannabis has been shown to treat cancer without any psychoactive effects.

Cannabinoids have been proven to reduce cancer cells as they have a great impact on the rebuilding of the immune system. Although not every strain of cannabis has the same effect, more and more patients are seeing success in cancer reduction in a short period of time by using cannabis. Contrary to popular  belief, smoking cannabis does not assist a great deal in treating disease within the body as therapeutic levels cannot be reached through smoking. Creating oil from the plant or eating the plant is the best way to go about getting the necessary ingredients, the cannabinoids.

The world has come a long way with regards to accepting this plant as a medicine rather than a harmful substance. It’s a plant that could benefit the planet in more ways than one. Cannabis is not something offered in the same regard as chemotherapy, but more people are becoming aware if it, which is why it’s so important to continue to spread information like this. Nobody can really deny the tremendous healing power of this plant.

Ralphie’s Theorem About Black Holes.

It is my professional opinion, as a published philostopher, that a black hole is a place, where the majority of mankind’s common sense disappeared into.  The density of any given black hole increases as more and more people give up their power to think for themselves, willingly or unwittingly, and leave that in the hands of those pillars of society, who are eminently better equipped to do this laborious chore for them. For it is universally known that said pillars do only have ‘their’ best interests at heart.

Inside such a hole resides a mountain of logic, deep thought, but also compassion and empathy. It is further fact that once a thought or feeling enters this place in space, it can never return to our dimension, which is a great relief to the pillars, who fear that an excess of brainpower or caring could result in an overload and the bursting of a very important bubble. This bubble is what keeps our world in such harmony and should never be messed with. Here I am wandering off into a dangerous zone of free thought. I shall cease and desist, before I upset the balance!

Quantum Dot Technology Could Lead To Solar Panel Windows.

From I fucking love science:

quantum dots

Researchers from Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Milano-Bicocca have designed and synthesized a new generation of quantum dots for use in solar energy systems that overcome previous inefficiencies in harvesting sunlight. The study has been published in the journal Nature Photonics.

Quantum dots, which are nanocrystals made of semiconducting materials, appeal to scientists for use in solar photovoltaics (solar panel systems) because of their versatility and low-cost. In particular, they are desirable for use in luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), which are photon-management devices that serve as alternatives to optics-based solar concentration systems.

LSCs are constructed from transparent materials containing emitters such as quantum dots. They concentrate solar radiation absorbed from a large area onto a significantly smaller solar cell, explains Victor Kilmov, one of the authors of the study. One exciting application of LSCs is the potential to develop photovoltaic windows, which could turn buildings into energy making factories.

Glow-in-the-Dark Roads Now a Reality!

From I fucking love science:

smart highway

A smart highway that promises to save energy while improving safety was unveiled along a 500-meter stretch in the Netherlands last week. Interactive and self-sustaining, it’s being called the “Route 66 of the future.”
The project is designed and developed by Daan Roosegaarde and Dutch engineering firm Heijmans Infrastructure. Earlier this year, we posted about other Studio Roosegaarde projects: houseplant reading lights and bioluminescent streetlamps. Now, this glow-in-the-dark technology actually exists on the N329 highway in Oss, about 100 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam.
The road markings are made with paint containing photo-luminescent powder that charges in the daytime and then releases a green glow at nighttime. Roosegaarde tells Wired UKthat Heijmans had managed to take its luminescence to the extreme: “It’s almost radioactive.”

First Official Climate Change Refugees Evacuate Their Island Homes for Good.

Photo via the Daily Mail

The day has finally come, and a critical landmark in the saga of global climate change is occurring as we speak—and hardly anyone has noticed. The Carteret Islanders of Papua New Guinea have become the world’s first entire community to be displaced by climate change. They’re the first official refugees of global warming–and they’re packing up their lives to move out of the way of ever-rising waters that threaten to overtake their homes and crops. The island they call home will be completely underwater by 2015. This story first broke a couple years ago, when it was first suggested that these islanders could become climate change refugees. But now that it’s actually happening–seems no one’s paying attention. And though the scenario isn’t as apocalyptic as some might imagine, life for the islanders has indeed all but become impossible on the Cartarets:

On the Carterets, king tides have washed away their crops and rising sea levels poisoned those that remain with salt. The people have been forced to move.

Scientists at Liverpool’s John Moore University have successfully cloned a dinosaur, a spokesman from the university said yesterday.

The dinosaur, a baby Apatosaurus nicknamed “Spot,” is currently being incubated at the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

The scientists extracted DNA from preserved Apatosaurus fossils, which were on display at the university’s museum of natural science. Once the DNA was harvested, scientists injected it into a fertile ostrich womb.

“Ostriches share a lot of genetic traits with dinosaurs,” said Dr. Gerrard Jones, a biology professor at LJMU and the project’s leading scientist. “Their eggshell microstructures are almost identical to those of the Apatosaurus. That’s why the cloning worked so perfectly.”

Those in the scientific community say the dinosaur cloning – the first ever of its kind – is a milestone for genetic engineering.

“I used to think this kind of thing could only happen in the movies,” said Dr. Gemma Sheridan, a LJMU chemistry professor. “But we’re making it happen right here in our lab. It’s astounding.”

The cloning attracted the attention of a wide variety of animal rights activists and religious groups. They claim that animal cloning is unethical and immoral.

PETA President Craig Farmer criticized the scientists for performing potentially life threatening threats on a new species.

“These scientists brought an animal from the Jurassic age back to life – just to watch it suffer!” he said.

But Dr. Sheridan doesn’t seem to be bothered by the activists’ quibbling. She says that the opportunities afforded by dinosaur cloning are endless.

Within ten years, we could repopulate the world with dinosaurs,” she said.

As of press time, the dinosaur is in stable condition. Scientists plan to run more tests on him today.

You Should Drink Alkaline Water!

Why You Should be Drinking Alkaline Water and How to Make it.

When you think about your personal health and nutrition goals, what food or nutrients do you usually consider to be most important? Consider this: Our brains are made up of about 70% water, our bodies about 80%, surely water should be considered one of the most important things we put into our body on a daily basis. Each morning when you rise, you are already 2 cups dehydrated.

To enhance your daily protocol whatever it may be now, you can do 1 simple thing that will give you more energy, help you focus, and reduce cravings. Can you guess what that 1 thing is going to be? Upon waking, drink 1 litre of filtered alkaline water. This is something Caleb and I were  advised to do by Preet at Organic Lives in Vancouver, BC when we began our journey with raw foods.

Your Tap water is generally a mixture of chlorine, anti-biotics, hormones and other metals that will go straight into your system.

Impure water can cause a weakened immune system and an array of other illnesses that occur when the immune system is vulnerable. You’re also in danger should anything contaminate the public water sources. I’m sure from time to time you’ve heard or read about the acid/alkaline balance that’s so crucial to staying healthy. When our bodies are too acidic, we experience low energy, fatigue, digestive issues, weight gain and other side effects that are completely avoidable just by drinking pure water and eating fresh organic vegetables with a healthy acid/alkaline balance.

Alkalinity is the key to a healthy immune system

Use an alkaline water filtration system whenever possible. Alkaline filtration systems can be costly, ranging from 1-3k, however you are able to find personal alkaline wands at your local health food store for around $30. Ideally, fresh spring water is the absolute best water for you to drink. Find a Spring is a website that was created for the sole purpose of helping you find the closest springs near your area.

You can find a natural spring near you at this website.

Napping Approved!

In some places, towns essentially shut down in the afternoon while everyone goes home for a siesta. Unfortunately, in the U.S.—more bound to our corporate lifestyles than our health—a mid-day nap is seen as a luxury and, in some cases, a sign of pure laziness. But before you feel guilty about that weekend snooze or falling asleep during a movie, rest assured that napping is actually good for you and a completely natural phenomena in the circadian (sleep-wake cycle) rhythm.

As our day wears on, even when we get enough sleep at night, our focus and alertness degrade. While this can be a minor inconvenience in modern times, it may have meant life or death for our ancestors. Whether you are finishing up a project for work or hunting for your livelihood, a nap can rekindle your alertness and have your neurons back up and firing on high in as little as 15 to 20 minutes.

Big name (and high-dollar) companies recognize this. Google and Apple are just a few that allow employees to have nap time. Studies have affirmed thatshort naps can improve awareness and productivity. Plus, who wouldn’t love a boss that lets you get a little shut-eye before the afternoon push?

study from the University of Colorado Boulder found that children who missed their afternoon nap showed less joy and interest, more anxiety, and poorer problem solving skills than other children. The same can be seen in adults that benefit from napping.

Researchers with Berkeley found an hour nap to dramatically increase learning ability and memory. Naps sort of provide a reboot, where the short term memory is cleared out and our brain becomes refreshed with new defragged space.

Magnets are not attracted to copper, but incredibly strong magnets interact with copper in a pretty amazing way. If you drop a neodymium magnet down through a copper pipe it’s descent is slowed. The stronger the magnet and the thicker the pipe, the slower the fall. Take a look.

This is an excellent demonstration of Lenz’s law and eddy currents. If you’re not familiar with Lenz’s Law, Wikipedia defines it as: “An induced electromotive force (emf) always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes the original change in magnetic flux”.

3D printed arm from Not Impossible Labs!

A company called Not Impossible Labs has come up with one of the best uses for 3D printer technology we’ve ever heard of: printing low-cost prosthetic arms for people, mainly children, who have lost limbs in the war-torn country of Sudan.

The project was the brain child of Mick Ebeling, founder of Not Impossible, a company dedicated to “technology for the sake of humanity.” Not Impossible is probably best known for its “Eyewriter” eye tracking glasses, created with free open source software, that helped a paralyzed graffiti artist draw and communicate using only his eyes.

Project Daniel started in 2012, when Ebeling read a story in Time magazine about Daniel Omar, a then 14-year-old Sudanese boy who lost both his hands from a bomb.

It inspired Ebeling to assemble a team capable of creating a low-cost, 3D-printed prosthetic on consumer-grade 3D printers. The team included the South African inventor of the Robohand, an Australian MIT neuroscientist, a 3D printing company in California and was supported by Intel and an engineering company called Precipart.

The arms they developed are inexpensive enough to be available to anyone who needs one, costing around $100 to produce, and can be printed in about six hours, reports Time’s Harry McCracken.

Daniel recieved his left arm in November and Ebeling then set up a 3D printing lab in a nearby hospital, Not Impossible says. Since then, many others have received arms and the effort could eventually help thousands.

Schools put genius child in special ed, tell mom he can’t learn. Now he’s free, and he could win a Nobel Prize

They said he would never learn, now he’ll teach them a thing or two…
A genius boy whose IQ is higher than Albert Einstein is on his way to possibly winning a Nobel Prize after being set free of special education programs in public schools. His mother made the decision to take him out of the programs, even after having doctors diagnose him with Aspergers and say that her son Jacob Barnett would never even learn to tie his shoes.

She describes in her book “The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing Genius” that she was afraid of trying to pull him out of school. “For a parent, it’s terrifying to fly against the advice of the professionals. But I knew in my heart that if Jake stayed in special ed, he would slip away.”

Jacob was not thriving in special ed classes. He kept turning deeper into himself and was uncommunicative with other people. His doctors prescribed medical treatment for the boy. When he wasn’t in therapy though, his mother noticed him doing amazing things. “He would create maps all over our floor using Q-tips. They would be maps of places we’ve visited and he would memorize every street.”

Jake dropped out of elementary school in the 5th grade. His incredible memory allowed him to attend university classes after he learned all of high school math in two weeks. Now he’s on track to graduate from college at age 14 and working on theories to build on Einstein’s theory of relativity.

60 minutes did a special on Jacob here.

Cheap Braille Printer Invented!

From I fucking love science:

The Mindstorms EV3 set from Lego is designed to let the user modify a number of different robotic projects, but 12-year-old Shubham Banerjee from Santa Clara, California didn’t want to just stick with the projects listed on the box. Instead, he added about $5 worth of materials and configured the set into a Braille printer.

While there are commercial Braille printers available, they cost upwards around $2,000. Banerjee’s Braigo (combination of Braille and Lego) printer totals about $350. The device currently prints letters A-Z, though he is already planning on updating the software to print numbers 1-10.

The best part? Banerjee is making his design and his software open source, so that anyone with a need for an inexpensive Braille printer can make their own.
